The claim that Linux will become a competitive and big gaming platform has been used before and I still don't see Linux becoming a big platform for gaming and home usage. Desktop/Laptop operating system browsing statistics February 2019: Windows: 87.56% macOS: 9.65% Linux: 2.14% Note: I'm not criticizing Linux, I just don't see it becoming a universal OS that will rival even macOS (ew), esp. not for gaming since there's little incentive for Windows users to drop it and go Linux. When it comes to professional use Linux fares much better, 23%, and that's where the strengths of the OS lies.

Its to do with your monitor refresh rates. Use 1080p. Most monitors have an auto config feature. 1920x1080~60Hz is the sweet spot.

i tried installing linux on an external hard drive once. i'm a god damn programmer and followed every step perfectly but it corrupted my drive so now any time i want to use it i have to tell windows it exists again. so uhhhh... a little hesitant.

Linux uses ext4 file system which Windows can't read ( why should it? ) it's not up to Windows to work with Linux is it? Use CMD DISKPART CLEAN if you want the drive to work with Windows again. Using an external drive, particularly USB drives, never really works properly due to the way the Bio's boots and loads the Kernel and display drivers. Get a sata internal drive.

Anytime you're installing an OS with a PC that already has one installed and you don't want to overwrite said pre-existing OS, it's always wise to unplug those hard drives and what-not regardless of whether you're installing Windows or Linux.

LOL once again some linux zealot thinks that this is the year that Linux gaming becomes more mainstream. Just like in 2018. And 2017. And 16. 15. 14, 13, 12, 11, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, 0, 1999, 1998.....You get the picture. Or maybe you don't because you're also a linux zealot. Thanks guys. I am about to buy the new alienware area 51 laptop and I really, really can't stand anything Microsoft so want to go Linux from scratch. I travel often so play games while Inflight (usually min 8 hours) and do a lot of video editing, design (autocad) and all the usual work, telegram, WhatsApp (which I will soon be dropping as it is also Microsoft now so not secure) and I'm dropping all Google (using brave /yandex browsers etc etc as anything Google related is NOT secure anymore) so, do you have video of introduction and fast track to the best Linux for my type of requirements?

First off, hold off on that alienware, that's a machine built for Windows, you could end up very disappointed! Do your research, make sure the drivers for the machine are in the Kernel!. The "best" type for your requirements would be anything Ubuntu based, so, PopOS, MX Linux, Mint.. Ubuntu itself. ( Pop is fantastic for laptops, why not just buy a system76? ). The only real thing to consider would be the sort of user environment you require https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PWp51BAzn-8&t . Video editors.. take a look at Kdenlive or Lightworks... not much to choose from in Linux regarding CAD... freeCAD or https://www.bricsys.com/en-intl/ is your best bet. Take a look at this site for other alternative software choices. https://alternativeto.net If it were me I'd get a system76 and install the new Ubuntu 19.04 version of KDE.

I'm glad Linux gaming is advancing so fast. However for me it's not really a valid alternative until I can play new games as they come out. Apex Legends is not supported so far, and Anno 1800 is playable only in offline mode so no multiplayer. Anyway compared to situation 10 years ago, this is huge leap!

+jayw654 Yes, so are we in agreement Windows 10 is harder to use?... using an OS is far different to the available software on it. It all depends on your use base. Lets face it the majority of home users just browse the web and play games, they'll do basic photo and video editing, check E. mail and that's it. Linux apps have that more than covered... even some professional software. Well known software could be better but what that software allows you do to is again covered. People are silly too, they'll fall into the marketing of "Pro" versions and "the next best thing" pay their money and never use 90% of the features. That's the software industry for you. Yes I agree, bigger names are needed for the comfort of the average user but not necessary, not to mention the amount of laziness in trying something different, people don't like change. Back to you original question.. why do some people choose a Mac, or a Chromebook over Windows 10? Choice I guess.. Linux is just another one.

+gilkesisking I actually have POP OS v19 installed and yes it is fairly easy to use but still has a ways to go but not too far. I believe in a few years I can recommend to everyone but better installing, removing and, variety of good and robust apps needs to improve. I do believe as the OS improves and gaming improves it will help drive better software and native games to the platform but it still isn't quite to that point yet. Hopefully v20 of Ubuntu/Pop OS the OS and its supporting software have improve as well as drivers. I will say just in the past 1 1/2 massive positive changes have taken place and can only imagine what 3 years will bring.

+jayw654 Many Distributions are actually perfect for for "none tec savvy" people. Of course, for most, the issue isn't using it its installing it. That can be scary and confusing to anyone who's never done it before. Go by a system76 PopOS laptop, just use it as its been set up and you can't go wrong. Its as easy to use as ChromeOS... I'd say its ChromeOS on steroids that you can game on. Windows 10 is a nightmare for these people. The confusing and scary part for people watching video's like this is they've never used it and they're shown all these other things you can do on top. Go install Pop, don't do anything. Just use it, click the button when it tells you to update done. The pop shop makes it super easy to install and remove software, no maintenance is required, no antivirus scanning, just use it. If I was coming from Linux to Windows I would find it extremely difficult to use with a much larger learning curve. Of course I have the advantage of using Windows for 20 years so I already know it. Depends on the distro, of course, but you're very wrong in presuming its hard. It seriously isn't. Its harder for Windows users true, because that's all they've know and they usually end up lost and frustrated trying to use it AS Windows, which it is not. Go Install Pop, just use it, you'll see.

Yes, the latest round of Windows botched updates has messed up a lot of display drivers and in some cases killed USB storage devices. It does seem to be even more resource heavy than usual. They probably want to sell more new, faster, hardware. You have one job Microsoft, one job.

I installed Manjaro KDE a week ago and I haven't booted back into Windows yet. The file hierarchy and terminal commands scared me a little but if you've used an android phone its really no big deal. I've had hiccups along the way but there is something infinitely more satisfying about fixing a problem in Linux vs Windows.Thank you Anthony!

Why should MS be very afraid of an OS that is only running on around 1% of all computers around the world? The biggest problem with Linux is that there are way too many versions available which I don't see the point of personally, and also it's just way too complicated for the everyday user. I've tried Linux multiple times and I just don't like it .. It will never be king and I certainly will not be moving to Linux. Linux has been bootable from USB pen for years so I hardly see how this is news?

Linux market share websites showing 1% are inaccurate at best because almost all Linux distro's are invisible to market share websites due to most Linux distro's not including trackers for privacy and security reasons. It wouldn't surprise me if actual market share of Linux desktop is 10% under the radar.

Actually they are, The Kernal, Vulken, and AMD. All open API's. Windows don't have that and while the code remains closed and propriety it never will. Lets not even mention the Linux kernels vastly superior direct use of hardware while the NT Kernel has to go though another translation layer before it even hits metal. Moral to these two comments? Both operating systems have good and bad parts. Windows is software support, Linux is hardware. As soon as Linux gets more software support Windows gaming is over... unless they ditch the 30 year old NT kernel AND catch up with the Linux one.

Question: I have a lot of experience with Linux myself and have worked with it a lot in the past, but I have always wondered with PPAs is how do I know whether or not they are not hosting malicious software? I've always found it odd that I never had to consult the developers' websites or repositories of each piece of software that I want to use.

If the PPA is on github, its been vetted. If its a major piece of software, blender for example, on an official website it's 99.9% safe. If its on some random website or forum post don't trust it. Of course update your mirror list and check Htop for anything running that shouldn't be.. it's probably the one using all the cpu in /var. Much like Windows, use common sense. If you just stick with the software manager, flatpak, snaps and app-images you've nothing to worry about.

Most, if not all Linux distro's come with "USB writer" or USB "flasher" if not you can install one from the software stores. rufus is a Windows program not Linux. rufus is very reliable and trustworthy IF you download it for Windows from the official site https://rufus.ie . OR you could always just order a Linux DVD/USB from disrtowatch, NOTHING is safer than downloading the official ISO torrent from a distro's website. Torrent file Hash codes prevent manipulation... or you know, it would be a different file. There is a way in Windows you can create an ISO with the command prompt much like the dd if=~ of=/dev/ command in Linux without the need for third party software.

dude it runs smooth because in LTT they have A HECK OF UNLIMITED MONSTRUOSITY HARDWARE. I just have a low spec laptop. And in Windows I can run skyrim smothly, and play league of legends (lutris doesnt work because of anticheat) i used linux and im mad ad it because the more I get interest in making games the more i know that linux is just "brute force" they dont have any optimized... becuse the kernel is a general purpose shit it runs your software but it doesnt run it well thats why i tested this and theres so many games opimized for windows that i sincerely think that google stadia will fail and linux... will keep being the same shit just because no one is taking control over it it doesnt have standards and its a mess thats why developers arent using it because its a fucking mess i hate mesa, i hate X11 I have Nvidia drivers because of optimus... this linux crap wont even work on other than PCs with NVIDIA hardcore gpus. I know how to use linux, thats why im saying its a piece of crab i regret waisiting my time learning it, nowadays everything is already invented why should i care for learning the same shit over and over

Some of them do. But a few guys got banned for using wine. EA is a horrible company, which nobody should support anyway.

I recommend Pop!_OS, it's beautiful, comes properly preinstalled with nvidia drivers and things just work out of the box like my dual monitor setup. Currently running Dark Souls III and Sekiro on it like a charm.

Where was Litrus for me over a month ago lol. I tried so hard to get SC2 running that I eventually found a W10 key to install on my new box. But I bounced through Manjaro and Pop, liking pop more once fully customized due to its support for drivers being so much better. This video series does make me happy, i hope that more comes in due time for the support for more software.

I just wanna thank you guys for putting Pop!_OS out there. Never heard of it before and I previously had issues with Linux and my WiFi adapter and GPU drivers, but Pop!_OS just works. I have absolutely zero reason to use Windows now.

I love Linux. But even this video's step by step makes Linux sound complicated. Linux these days has an easier learning curve than Windows or Mac.

I love linux but the initial learning curve can make any newbie run away from it especially people of non technical background. Unless linux become almost a windows look alike it will keep having a hard time being adopted by general public. Yes, I am speakig by experience. I have used the xfce distro of linux but it took me a lot of time and RnD to get all the softwares and settings to give it an environment as similar to my other windows laptop. Not that I am complaining but for an average home user it will be a lot of work.

xfce is an environment not a distro.. you probably should have looked for a different one rather than trying to "fix it"

After Manjaro I switched to ArchLabs distro. Manjaro had a lot of default stuff installed that I did not need.
